Close-up beige carpet

At Floor Coverings International White Bear Lake, we know that every once and a while you like change.

Rearranging or redecorating a room is a great way to get that newly renovated feel without going outside your budget.

Sometimes, however, moving your furniture to a new location in a room comes with pesky problems. One of those problems is a dent in your carpet caused by furniture that’s been in the same place for a long period of time.

This may not be a problem with all carpet types, but if this happens to you, don’t panic. We’re here to help!

Here are some tips for renewing your dented carpet:

Get Creative with Kitchen Utensils

This is one of the simplest methods. First, take a kitchen fork and gently rake it across the affected area, first in one direction and then in another. Next, place a hot, damp washcloth down to steam the area a bit before drying with a hair dryer on its hottest setting.

Use an Ice Cube

This technique is easy and convenient. Place an ice cube (or two if the spot is wider) over the indented area and wait until the ice cube melts. This may treat the carpet entirely, but if it doesn’t, you can once again use a fork to gently move the carpet back into its rightful place. Then pat the area dry to avoid water damage, but do not use ice or water on carpets that cannot be cleaned with water. If water cannot be used on your carpet, contact the carpet manufacturer to ask for advice.

Utilize Your Iron

Another way to fix this problem is to place a hot, damp washcloth over the affected area(s) and then hold an iron on medium to high heat a couple of inches above the cloth for about a minute. After this, gently dab up any residual water with a paper towel. You can also try directly running the iron over a damp towel a few times if your carpet is not too delicate, but it may be safer to just let the iron hover if that works for you.

If you can, wait a day to see if your carpet bounces back by itself. It’s always better for the issue to resolve itself naturally if it doesn’t take long.
